PSYCHIATRIC NURSING

For information and updates on psychiatric nursing in British Columbia, please see the newsmagazine of the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC, the CRPNBC Communicator.  Editor, Melodie Hull, RPN, MSC, MED

Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN) in British Columbia have a long and proud history of providing expertise in the care of persons with mental health challenges.  Like many provinces in Canada, psychiatric nursing programs have run as a parallel stream to general nursing, beginning in the early 1920s.  Education programs have developed from short training programs in mental hospitals to college diplomas and now include baccalaureate and masters degrees. The first Canadian psychiatric nursing undergraduate degree was offered at Brandon University, Manitoba in the 1980s.

Registered Psychiatric Nursing education includes courses in psychology, sociology, as well as nursing theory and practice in general.  It goes without saying that psychiatric nursing education has a main curricular theme of theory and practice for all aspects of mental health and addictions across the lifespan.  This includes an emphasis on interpersonal communication skills, individual and group counselling and therapies and so on.  Psychiatric nurses also study general nursing skills and competencies including full physical and mental health assessment, nursing care and interventions, medical-surgical skills (i.e: wound care, nasogastric intubation and feeding, tracheostomy care, etc.), and pharmacology/medication administration.  RPNs work with individuals who are challenged by addictions, grief & loss, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Across Canada, entry to practice requires registration. To attain a credential of R (registered) for RPN, psychiatric nurses must graduate from a program accredited by/recognized by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses and succeed on a national psychiatric nursing exam. The designation of R is permitted by each province’s Health Professions Act. In BC, RPNs have been recognized by the Health Professions Act since 1999. Prior to that, they were recognized by the Nurses Act of BC. In BC, BPN and BScPN programs are offered at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Douglas College.

RPNs in British Columbia work in a wide variety of settings.  Some examples are:

  • staff nurses on  in-patient psychiatric units in general hospitals
  • nurse-therapists in  out-patient psychiatric departments of hospitals
  • psychiatric-nurse clinicians and/or psychiatric nurse liaison/urgent response nurses in Emergency Departments of all major hospitals
  • community mental health nurses in case management, assessment, care, counselling and therapy
  • forensic psychiatry as staff nurses, case managers and administrators
  • nurse clinician(s) at the BC Center for Disease Control
  • administration for the BC Health Authorities
  • education – teaching in BPN, BScPN, BSN and practical nursing programs
